The Battle of Gettysburg
It is also the largest battle ever fought in North America, involving around 85,000 men in the Union’s Army of the Potomac under Major General George Gordon Meade and approximately 75,000 in the Confederacy’s Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert Edward Lee. Casualties at Gettysburg totaled around 23,000 for the Union. The casualties for the confederates were around 28,000.
Many people think of the Battle of Gettysburg as a turning point because the South's army had fatal losses. In 1863, it was fought from July 1st until July 3rd. On July 4th the surrender of Vicksburg, Mississippi was the ultimate turning point in the Civil War. The Civil War would still continue for 2 more years with several other major battles.
